Time again for Drag Racing 101!
This weeks term, BURNOUT. Online definition, Burnout: spinning the rear tires in water to heat and clean them prior to a run for better traction. A burnout precedes every run.
Drag racing is about who can get to the finish line first. If the vehicle spins the tires at the start of the race, time is wasted and forward movement is inhibited. To prevent this from happening, specially manufactured tires with a very soft compound (racing slicks) are used. The vehicle rolls through a large puddle of water (aka "water box") to make it easier to spin the tires. The driver then presses the gas pedal down quickly to cause the tires to begin to violently spin (read "burnout"). As they spin, the heat generated causes the tires to soften even more and become very sticky. If done correctly, the vehicle take off at the start of the race with minimal to no spinning. You might even see the vehicle reach for the sky!
